RESEARCH PROJECT 1
RESEARCH INTO THE AREA OF COMMUNICATIONS EFFECTIVENESS AND KNOWLEDGE
TRANSFER - AMERSHAM HEALTH
Sponsored by the Queen's Awards Research Fellowship Fund, London Business
School conducted research into the area of communications effectiveness and
knowledge transfer based on a case study at Amersham Health. The purpose of this
research was to develop a comprehensive measure of knowledge transfer, explore
the relationship between communication vehicles and management practices as
methods for fostering knowledge transfer, and, finally, investigate the employee
and organizational outcomes associated with knowledge transfer. Based on a
triangulation of research methods, which included semi-structured interviews and
questionnaires, employees' perceptions towards communications effectiveness and
knowledge sharing were analysed. The research then linked employees' experiences
to business results. Although there is still a great potential to improve
communications and knowledge transfer within Amersham Health, research findings
indicate that management practices can and do have a significant impact on
employee learning and knowledge transfer, on employee attitudes and beliefs, and
ultimately on performance. This report contributes to an understanding of the
causes or consequences of knowledge transfer and how to best measure it.
