RESEARCH PROJECT 3
LOCALLY IMPOSED RESTRICTIONS AND CURFEWS - A UK STUDY (ROAD
DISTRIBUTION AND LOGISTICS INDUSTRY) - SAFEWAY PLC
This research was initiated in order to investigate the impact of the
increasing number of restrictions and curfews placed upon the successful
operation of distribution and logistics activities, especially deliveries in
city centres. Local authorities in the UK are seeking to reduce noise problems
during the night whilst also seeking to promote pedestrian and road safety, and
remove traffic congestion at peak times. Although restrictions and curfews on
logistics and distribution are based on the need to improve traffic flow and
capacity, reduce pollution and encourage general safety, for example, the
associated cost incurred by both large and small organisations that need to
deliver to their customers by road may be considerable. Further, each local
government authority was believed to operate in its own specific manner and
hence with limited consistency in the application of regulations. This research
investigated the implications of official restrictions for small and
medium-sized distribution organisations, and explored how the imposed
restrictions could be dealt with on a practical and mutually beneficial
basis.
