Nice with toast: An Angus-based food comompany which has landed a contract to supply marmalade to Spain has joined the distiller of The Macallan whisky as one of seven Scottish winners of this year's Queen's Awards for Enterprise, writes Christine Ferguson.
Mackay's of Carnoustie, which manufactures chocolate tennis balls for Wimbledon along with a range of preserves including strawberry champagne jam, scooped an award for international trade after racking up £1.5m in export sales over the last year.
It has signed a £50,000 contract to supply its own-brand marmalade to Spanish food importer Boltoncile and supplies its products to 20 overseas markets. Meanwhile Sandy Lawtie, distillery manager, raised a glass to The Macallan's success at Easter Elchie House on Speyside.
The Macallan, part of the Edrington Group, has landed the award for international trade for the sixth time. The whisky sells more than 300,000 cases a year to 60 countries, including the US, its main market which accounts for 33% of overseas sales.
Other winners in the international trade category include Renfrewshire company Peak Scientific Instruments, University of Dundee's Centre for energy, Edinburgh's Wolfson Microelectronics and Stromness-based Combustion Energy and Steam specialists.
