* Queen's Awards celebrate timber

29/04/2006

TTJ

Companies in the architectural joinery, timber frame and window manufacturing sectors are among the winners in the Queen's Awards for Enterprise.

Winners include Glenrothes based architectural joinery company Haldane (UK) Ltd, roof window manufacturer Velux and York-based ecological architecture practice Eco Arc, which specialises in timber frame developments.

Haldane's innovation award is for continuous development of its architectural joinery facility. A £500,000 investment in CNC machining technology has helped transform the company from a small player in a declining market to a specialist in timber machining, with a turnover of £2.8m.

Flagship projects undertaken by Haldane included intricate timber balustrading for the Queen's Prayer Room at Windsor Castle and 2,500 linear metres of timber handrails at Ascot racecourse.

Haldane UK managing director Forrester Adam said: "Winning the Queen's Award for Enterprise is one of the highest achievements any UK company can be awarded and we are thrilled that our success and the advances we have made to our manufacturing technology have been recognised."

Chartered architect Eco Arc was presented with a sustainable development award for its achievement in CO, neutral sustainable building design and development.

The company's green oak and prefabricated timber panel designs have already won international awards.

Velux's award for innovation was for the extension of its loft conversion business to include a house design service which incorporates roof windows into new housing design.
