* Queen's Awards give a fillip to IT

03/05/2005

Computer Weekly

The Institute of IT Training and a handful of IT companies were recognised in this year's Queen's Awards for Enterprise.

In the international trade sector, winners included Datapath, a producer of specialised computer graphics boards; Delcam, a supplier of computer-aided design software for the manufacturing industry; and NavisWorks, a provider of computer software and services for use in construction, shipbuilding and process plant industries.

A Queen's Award for Enterprise is a prestigious endorsement of commercial success. Winning companies are entitled to use the Queen's Award emblem on goods, packaging and marketing materials for five years as a symbol of their business achievements.

IT companies also picked up awards in the innovation category. Winners included AGD Systems, which makes pedestrian detection equipment that aids traffic management and road safety; Checkprint, a supplier of software for cheque handling; and Datix, which develops healthcare risk management software.

The Institute of IT Training's trainer assessment programme (Tap), created to assess the skills of IT training professionals, has been awarded the Queen's Award for Enterprise. Tap has been taken up as a standard by large employers, including the NHS and the Department for Education and Skills, following its introduction in 1998. More than 60% of FTSE 100 companies now employ Tap certified trainers. The programme has helped to professionalise IT training, making it more learner-focused, said the IITT.

A total of 137 winners were announced at the awards, now in their 40th year.
