Winning a Queen’s Award has been a huge boost for the staff of beach café company Venus, says its managing director Michael Smith.

“We are a small family firm, everyone has to work very hard, so receiving outside endorsement of our efforts to create a sustainable enterprise is very important.”

The Awards are regarded as a quality standard and are given each year to innovative and enterprising British companies.  To enter, businesses must have at least two-full time staff.  UK-based units of overseas companies can also apply.

There is no limit to number of awards that can be won each year and those companies that do not win receive practical and detailed feedback.

A recent survey amongst past winners found that 90 per cent considered the Award added commercial value to the firm, achieved positive publicity and raised the business’s profile.  Entry can be in one of three categories: International Trade, Innovation or Sustainable Development.  Companies can nominate themselves.
