Mine firm's award

A mine cleareance firm has beena warded one of the highest business accolades int he country. BACTEC, based in Rochester, won the International Trade category of the Queen's Award for Enterprise.

Guy Lucas MBE, manaigng director of the ordnance clearance firm, was honoured by Her Majesty in recognition of the company's outstanding export performance.

Allan Willett, Lord Lieutenant of Kent and the Queen's representative in teh county presented a crystal bowl to Guy Lucas in a ceremony at Commisioner's House at the Historic Dockyard, Chatham.

Formed in 1991, BACTEC has been direclty involved with the disposal of more than 500,000 land mines and thousands of tons of unexploded ordnance. The company has cleared more than eight million square metres of contaminated land in 40 countries and has won major contracts in Lebanon, Libya, Cambodia, Mozambique and Belgium. The awards, given on the Prime Minister's recommendations, are the most prestigious for business performance.
