* Shoe Firm Wins Industry Award

23/04/2004

West Cumberland Times and Star

ATHLETICS shoe firm New Balance in Flimby has won a coveted Queen’s Award for Enterprise.

It is one of just two firms to win the award in Cumbria this year, the other is based in Penrith.

The company was recognised for its commitment to UK domestic manufacturing and six consecutive years of export growth.

It produces 28,000 pairs of shoes every week at its factory, which employs 210 staff. The firm also has a base in Cheshire.

About 90 per cent of Flimby’s production is exported with almost half going into Europe, said factory manager Andy Okolowicz.

He added: “People do not want Chinese-made footwear, particularly in Europe, they want UK-made products.

“This should give us an opportunity to build greater recognition in our overseas markets and get more orders. We would love to be able to expand in Flimby in the future.”

He said the award recognised the efforts of every single member of staff at the factory.

The awards are made each year by the Queen, on the advice of the Prime Minister and industry, commerce and the trade unions.

It is seen as the most prestigious award for business performance and lends added credibility to products.

New Balance was set up at Lillyhall in 1982 and has become one of West Cumbria’s biggest manufacturing success stories.

As many companies have moved operations overseas, New Balance continues to affirm its commitment to West Cumbria.

It is buying a seven-acre piece of land next to its factory with long-term expansion in mind. The area is big enough to double the size of the factory and workforce.

Mr Okolowicz added: “In the long-term, we are committed to made in England and in particular made in Flimby.”
