* Innovative firm wins a Queen’s Award

15/07/2003

Peterborough Evening Telegraph

A Greater Peterborough firm has invested in £1.6 million worth of new equipment and secured a royal accolade for innovation.
Burall Plastec Limited, based in Cromwell Road, Wisbech, was visited by the Vice Lord Lieutenant for Cambridgshire, Mr Michael Marshall, who presented the firm with its Queen’s Award for Enterprise.
Customers, suppliers, some of the 97 employees and local dignitaries turned out for the occasion at the company’s premises.
Burall PlasTec was among 14 East of England companies to win a prestigious Queen’s Award in 2003.
It gained the award in the innovation category for its transparent polypropylene cartons. Burall PlasTec developed a unique food-safe glued carton which is fully recyclable and these cartons now appear on the shelves of many UK and International retailers.
The award recognises outstanding innovation in the manufacture of transparent polypropylene cartons.
Securing the award gave cause for double celebrations for the firm, which has just invested £1.6 million in the latest printing technology working to create packaging and promotional solutions and boost capacity and productivity at the firm.
The impressive new six-colour Heidelberg CD74 packaging press is specially adapted to achieve the highest levels of printing quality even on difficult plastic materials.
Jon Allen, Burall PlasTec’s managing director, said; “We are honoured to receive a Queen’s Award. It shows that small organisations with a highly dedicated staff can still win prestigious awards and provide a perfect demonstration to our customers of the quality of the service we provide.”
Stephen Brice, acting Queen’s Awards Secretary, said; “This is an excellent achievement. We were delighted the Vice Lord Lieutenant was able to present it to them, and share the celebrations with staff who have contributed to its innovation. We hope that The Queen’s Award will help continue the company’s success.”
