* Queen’s Awards Recognise Three Innovations

25/04/2003

Yorkshire & The Humber Cutting Service

Three Teesside firms have been named in this year’s Queen’s Awards for Enterprise.
DuPont Teijin Films UK and Uniqema, both of Wilton, and Tracerco, from Billingham, were among 123 companies honoured in three different categories. All three won awards in the innovation section.
Dupont Teijin Films UK’s award recognises its continuous innovation and development in plastic card technology.
The firm, which employs 100 people, has developed a toughened card body material, Melinex Core 1, which gives the cards a longer lifespan.
Tracerco, part of Johnson Matthey, has 100 workers at its Belasis Avenue base in Billingham.
Its award is for its Tracerco Profiler, an instrument which accurately detects the boundaries between oil and gas, water and emulsion in material produced by oil and gas wells. The instrument has been sold to many major oil companies for use across the world.
The smaller Uniqema has just 54 employees but gained the Queen’s award for the development and manufacture of the Emkarate RL range of Lubricants used in refrigeration equipment.
The Product has played an important role in enabling fridge manufacturers to phase out the use of CFCs and replace them with ozone-benign HFC refrigerants.
John Williams, Trade Partners UK’s international trade director for the North-East, said: “Being awarded a Queen’s Award for Enterprise is a tremendous achievement for any company and I’m delighted to see the North-East has once again proved to have so many worthy winners.
“We have a small number of companies who work very hard to export their goods and services. This award is a great testament to the determination and business skills of the winners and, I hope, will help us encourage more companies to take on the challenge of international trade.”
The Awards are held for five years and the winners each receive a hand-made crystal bowl.
Three representatives from each firm are also invited to a reception given by The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace.
