* We’re Among The Uk’s Best – Royal Honour For Export Businesses

21/04/2003

Gloucestershire Echo

Two Gloucestershire companies have been honoured in the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise 2003.
Alan Dick and company, of Cheltenham, and Ultra electronics Precision Air Systems, of Churchdown, have been singled out for their outstanding contribution to international trade.
The Queen announced that ADC, based in London road, has been awarded the accolade.
The firm, which is a global leader in the provision of wireless communication systems, won Queen’s Awards for export in 1979 and 1984.
Group president Alan Dick welcomed the latest accolade as a “massive endorsement of the company’s achievements and a tribute to the had work of our people worldwide.”
He said: “The Queen’s Award for Enterprise is a wonderful achievement. It means so much to the many people who have worked so hard to raise the company to its present position.”
Mr Dick said the company has strived to achieve global success.
He said: “Development of international trade has been a key strategy since establishing our first overseas office in the early 1970’s. We have made it our policy to base ourselves abroad rather than relying to a great extend on export activity.”
PAS is the weapon systems division of Ultra Electronics, based at the Anson Business Park in Cheltenham Road East.
The aerospace and defence firm designs and manufactures high pressure air compressor systems.
These are used by the military to cool missiles, thermal imagers and sensors and eject items from aircraft.
This January, Ultra was celebrating after achieving record orders during 2002.
Chief executive Dr Julian Blogh said: “We’re delighted to receive this award, which recognises the tremendous achievements of the team at Ultra PAS.
“Ultra’s growth in HiPPAG exports is a superb example of our successful strategy of being a niche player in a range of growth market sectors, with sustainable competitive advantage derived from technology or market position.”
HiPPAG is a range of miniature, electronically controlled compressors.
Representatives from the two companies will join colleagues from 123 other top businesses across the country at a reception at Buckingham Palace.
They will also be presented with hand made crystal bowls by the Queen’s representative in Gloucestershire, the Lord Lieutenant Henry Elwes.
The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise recognise the achievements of successful businesses, where management and employees work as a team. They are held for five years and winners can fly the award flag and display the emblem.
