* Top Export Award For Tyne Yard

21/04/2003

Shields Gazette

The Bonga has helped a Tyneside shipyard scoop a top industry award.
Work on the massive oil vessel is on-going at Amec in Wallsend.
And the yard’s success in landing the order to prepare the Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel for her journey to Nigeria has been recognised by The Queen’s Award For International Trade.
Judges considered Amec’s work on world class projects like the Bonga when deciding to give the yard the prestigious honour.
The Queen’s Award is recognition of Amec’s outstanding performance – principally in the oil, gas and pressing industries – during the last three years.
Growth
The company’s expansion in support of long-term clients in areas such as Azerbaijan, China, Eastern Russia, Gulf of Mexico, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, the Philippines and West Africa, has resulted in a four-fold increase in export earnings for the company’s UK-based operating subsidiary and strong prospects for further international growth.
An important factor in the judges’ decision was Amec’s focus on customer and supplier relationships and its ability to deliver complex projects and services in challenging areas of the world, all underpinned by a positive company culture of safety, sustainable development and protection of the environment.
David Robson, chief executive of Amec’s UK-based operating subsidiary, said: “I am delighted that our strategic vision to grow Amec’s business in selected international markets, while maintaining our market-leading position in the UK, has been recognised with this award.
“ It is as a result of the hard work and professionalism of many thousands of dedicated people across our entire business. We are all very proud of this achievement.”
Amec, a large proportion of whose workforce live south of the Tyne, provides specialised services and engineering solutions for clients in the oil and gas, transport and industrial sectors. It generates revenues of some £5.5bn, approximately 19 per cent of which is related to oil and gas activities.
